Steel and iron door terminology can describe appearance as well as construction. A decorative iron entrance, a slim steel French door and a modern steel and glass partition may use different sections, infill and finishing details. Ask what the assembly is made from before comparing names or photographs.
Identify structural and decorative components
Separate the frame, leaf structure, decorative elements, glazing and hardware. Ask for the actual metal descriptions and applicable section or thickness information where those values have been confirmed. Decorative scrollwork and a structural frame perform different roles, even when they share the same finish.
Describe whether the door is intended for an exposed entrance, a sheltered area or an interior opening. The same visual style should not be assumed suitable for every environment.
Compare construction beyond the front view
| Component | Information to review |
|---|---|
| Frame and leaf | Sections, connections, geometry and proposed dimensions |
| Hinges and hardware | Configuration, support and compatibility with the assembled door |
| Glass | Type, retention details, appearance and any opening glass panel |
| Threshold and seals | Intended interfaces and applicable project conditions |
| Decorative work | Pattern references and how they affect cleaning or access |
A finished photograph can communicate the visual design, but it cannot confirm hidden construction, metal thickness or the capacity of a hinge. Request the relevant drawing and component description for the proposed order.
Treat corrosion protection as a system
Review pretreatment, coating and the handling of joints, edges and fixing points. Tell the supplier about exposure conditions and ask for the corresponding maintenance information. Packaging and installation practices also matter because finished surfaces may be damaged during transport or site work.
A coating name is not an unconditional promise against corrosion. Where the project has a specified exposure or test requirement, review the available evidence and its scope before including a performance statement in the order.
Translate the selection into the quotation
Request a clear list of included hardware, glazing, handles, seals and installation accessories. Record which decisions are optional and which require confirmation. For distributors, keep this information with each approved style so subsequent orders refer to the same construction.
Visit the iron and steel collection to explore system types, or prepare a distributor supply inquiry. Include quantity, destination, opening dimensions, intended use and finish requirements so the discussion can focus on an identifiable supply package.
